Each author, Yeats, Swift, and Joyce is indelibly intertwined with their native Ireland. Edna O'Brien writes in her biography of James Joyce that of all the great Irish writers, Joyce's relationship with his native country "remains the most incensed and yet the most meditative" (O'Brien 15)
"But we always keep the dearest things to ourselves," Joyce wrote, "a telling confidence," O'Brien writes, "and a poignant admission of how emotionally bereft Joyce really was" (O'Brien 11). Marvin Magalaner writes that critics are sharply divided on Joyce's relationship with Ireland and that most literary critics should see his writing in literary perspective and that not even Joyce's words themselves may be accepted without question (Magalaner 20)
W. Rolleston formed the plans for an Irish Literary Society in London to publicize the idea of Irish culture (Peterson 28)
He also officially adopted the Abbey as the Irish State Theatre and took an active role in forming an Irish Academy of Letters, writing a new copyright act, striking a new Irish coinage, and bringing about improvements in education (Peterson 41). Yeats deplored modern education and made his comparison between the Protestant appointees to the Senate and the elected man, "emotional as a youthful chimpanzee, hot and vague" (Tuohy 218)
He finds that the Irish mind has still "an ancient cold, explosive detonating impartiality" while the English mind has "turned into a bed-hot harlot" (Tuohy 218). From 1708 to 1714, Jonathan Swift was in London, having been sent there as a petitioner for the Irish Church (Hunting 20)
In his seventieth year he wrote that walking though the streets of Dublin, he received "a thousand hats and blessings" (Hunting 24). Swift was a great Irish patriot and became a popular hero and legend in his own lifetime and achieved all the fame he had so passionately desired when young (Rowse 215)
Moreover, Swift's presence looms behind much of the modern Irish literature (Rowse 215). The Irish are renowned for their gifts as storytellers, and the streets of Dublin are filled with reminders of its rich literary past, as "their words are echoed by the next generation of Dublin's writers who took comfort from them and challenged their dominance" (McConnell Pp)
Thus, water pollution is not as big an issue as people make it, and the country can deal with it simply and effectively by simply ignoring the problem, and looking for bigger fish to fry. Other reports show that pollution has increased: "The number of national pollutant registers worldwide has grown rapidly in recent years, fueled by public demands for the right to know about the hazardous substances produced by local industries" (Bast 11)
How can that be? One hysterical writer warns, "Residential streets and driveways are inundated with oils and metals from cars and trucks, while lawns and gardens release fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides and pets deposit waste along curbsides. According to the EPA, stormwater runoff from urban areas is the leading pollutant of rivers and lakes" (Billow)
These laws tried to limit "point discharge" of pollution into rivers, lakes, and streams, but they, like most laws, were flawed. These researchers note, "Originally, it was expected that by gradually eliminating point source pollution discharges, the 1985 goal of no pollution discharge would be achieved which, in turn, would lead to clean water" (Freedman and Jaggi 21)
An expert in water pollution writes, "Added to the pressures from expanding populations in the countryside, undeveloped rural regions can also attract industrial development. Some industries contribute their own source of contamination to streams and groundwater systems" (Goldstein 120)
Another writer notes, "Only a tiny fraction of the Earth's fresh water reservoirs is easily accessible for human use. Lakes, wetlands and rivers, however, do not comprise the remaining major fresh water compartments" (Krautz 144)
One of the first premises of Orwell's essay is that language and thought are connected. He writes that an "effect can become a cause, reinforcing the original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely" (Orwell 317)
