Many books and other media focus on a need to return to empathy for other people and for nature in general (Heimburger, 2009; Muratova, 2007), while others look at business ethics and those of leadership specifically as essentially broken and needing new guidance (Newman, 2000)
This paper examines the research in this area to determine the truth and fiction behind the claim Greed is not a difficult concept to grasp because it is something that everyone feels at one time or another. Take Wal-Mart as an example. Because these large stores are able to sell in bulk at a level that no small store ever could, they have supposedly closed main small town main streets all over the United States (Rhode, 2005)
A leader is someone who does not look at the world as something to exploit, but sees it as something that he or she can make more livable and better for the people being led (Wilson & Pelletier, 1997). Another possible avenue is to look at the corporation as a person (as it is considered in many cases legally (Ripken, 2009))), and determine if it is better to have one where all of the people act out there greed and survival of the fittest fantasies or not
It is difficult to say if greed and a survival of the fittest mind set somehow coexist, but ethicists think it does to at least some extent. A great deal of studies have been conducted regarding powerful people (almost exclusively men in the studies) who have been somehow led to poor ethical behavior because of greed (Thompson, 2004)
Of course, it is possible to reverse this trend with proper ethics demonstrated by the leaders in business. Both the aforementioned cases serve as the possible and most clear evidences of the corporate greed that is the bane of the existing societies. Both the top companies out of sheer greed and love of money ended up "cooking books" and attempted fraud that led them to the point of bankruptcy and worldwide notoriety (Enron, WorldCom and Wall Street: Why Should you care)
