This is very hurtful for those who struggle to pay for their education. But moreover, an article in the New York Times reports that in Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota, Colorado, Michigan, Texas and Florida, state colleges have "eliminated entire engineering and computer science departments" (Rampell, 2012)
Educational Budget Cuts Will children of today become leaders of tomorrow? Unfortunately, this looming question continues to resonate in the hearts and minds of many parents and educators. Today, many elementary and high schools throughout the United States are receiving less state funding than last year in at least 37 states, and in at least 30 states school funding now stands below 2008 levels -- often far below (Fabian, 2011)
Additionally, budget cuts counteract and undermine education reform. Accordingly, the lack of funding hinders the ability of school districts to deliver high-quality education (Ginsberg, 2009)
Federal employment data show that school districts began reducing the overall number of teachers and other employees in September 2008, when the first round of budget cuts began taking effect. The job losses have accelerated in the last year as the cuts have deepened; by September 2011, local school districts had cut 278,000 jobs nationally compared with 2008 (Oliff & Leachman, 2011)
By the turn of the millennium, the prison system was spending an average of $25,000 annually on each inmate (Luekefeld & Tims 1992). This number had increased to over $28,000 annually by 2004 (Awofeso 2005)
The last few decades had actually seen an increase in prison spending, as more and more facilities diversified their programs and practices to incorporate new methods of inmate care. During the 1990s, there seemed to be huge increases in corrections budgets across the country (King & Mauer 2002)
Research often states that this is because of an increase in the overall prison populations, which forced correctional facilities to increase their operating costs dramatically. Currently the state is facing a 438 million dollar budget shortfall. The proposed cuts will slice about 60 million from health care services for the mentally ill, poor, and unemployed (Hamilton, Prybylo, & Schmidt)
Mental health advocates say proposed cuts could destroy an already tenuous safety net and that slashing funds for the mentally ill will create much bigger problems for the state down the road. Valerie Gamache of the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) Maine points out that the population that is going to be hit the hardest with the proposed budget cuts is the population that also has the very least ability to advocate for themselves and has the least public understanding or empathy associated with it (Rooks)
